From Futurama, on New Year's Eve, 1999, pizza delivery boy Fry was accidentally cryogenically frozen, and was not revived until 1000 years later. Before he left for his last delivery, he told his dog, Seymour, to wait for him outside the pizza shop. By accident, Fry finds Seymour's fossilized remains, and tries to clone him, as well as transfer the dog's memories to the clone.
The story of someone awaiting the return of a loved one is very common. Jesus told of the parable of the prodigal son. In Takahashi's Mermaid Saga, there's a story of a girl (Nae Kogure) who thought she was going to meet with Yuta, but he never showed up.
